From the Pastor: Focus and Re-Focus – Fix Your Eyes Upon Jesus in 2026
And there is no God apart from me, a righteous God and a Savior; there is none but me. Turn to me and be saved, all you ends of the earth, for I am God, and there is no other (Isaiah 45:21b-22).
It is the beginning of a New Year, and we give thanks for the freshness, promise, and hope it brings. Yet in many of our circumstances, the difficulties we struggled with in 2025 persist; we have not solved all the problems or overcome all the dangers. As we lie in bed at night, panic threatens to overtake our thoughts. In those moments, the “theme” God has assigned to my new year comes to mind. “Focus… and Re-Focus on God”. Once is not enough. Again and again, each time fear, uncertainty, or anxiety stir in your heart, focus and re-focus on God. Worship him, expressing praise and devotion. Seek his will and his wisdom in all things. Rely on his strength when you feel weak. Turn to Jesus – repent; change the direction of your thought and attention to Jesus, and let his presence fill you with peace! It is a struggle for us to “let go and let God”!
Last night, as I sought relief from worry in prayer, I found myself singing the chorus of a familiar hymn: “Turn your eyes upon Jesus, Look full in His wonderful face; And the things of earth will grow strangely dim in the light of His glory and grace.” © 1922 by Singspiration Music/ASCP. I have been trying this whenever I feel a moment of panic, and I find my heart is calmed and peace comes to my troubled mind. This is the direction God has given me for 2026, and I share it with you as an encouragement. Focus… and Re-Focus on God (as many times as needed): Fix Your Eyes Upon Jesus! With eyes fixed on our Savior, we are ready for whatever the New Year brings!

Giving to Denominational Projects
At Thanksgiving, our collection for the annual Loaves and Fishes Offering provided $195 for the Hot Lunch Program serving children in Iloilo City, Philippines. The Gift to the King Offering, collected in December, provided $298 to be used in constructing a new Cumberland Presbyterian church building in Planeta Rica, Colombia. We are grateful for prayers and financial support for these outreach projects of the Cumberland Presbyterian Church.
C.P. Church Outreach Programs
On Thursday, January 8th we will have our second “Free Outreach Dinner”. Anyone is invited to join us for a hot meal served from 5:30 P.M. to 7:00 P.M. Spread the word. Also, in January we will have open enrollment for any adults that want to join us in classes ranging from Arts & Crafts to Phone and Computer use. Stop by to sign up Monday through Friday, 10:00 A.M. to 3:00 P.M. and see what we have to offer.
Pine Tree CPWM Delivers Gifts of Encouragement
The Pine Tree CP Women’s Ministry met on December 20, 2025, to prepare trays of cookies to share with those who are currently unable to join worship or fellowship activities. Cookie gifts were delivered in the week between Christmas and New Year. Through the visits, we renewed ties with those we have not seen recently and encouraged those who are healing from injury or illness. Crocheted gifts of scarves and caps, crafted by member Helen Nunn, also were delivered to residents at the East Texas Women’s Center. Our next meeting will be February 21, 2026. Please join us!
January Noon Meal
The Noon Fellowship Meal for January will be held following worship on January 11, 2026. All are invited to bring your favorite soup, salad, or dessert to share with others as we gather in fellowship with the family of God.

From the Pastor: Prepare to Receive and Share the Light of Christ!
Jesus said, “I am the Light of the World; the one who follows me will not walk in darkness but have the light of life.”
We have begun the season of Advent in the church calendar. Advent means “coming”. In the four weeks before Christmas, we observe traditions that help us to focus on the light of Christ. Advent is a time of expectation, waiting, and spiritual preparation. Celebration of the birth of Jesus takes on greater meaning when we recognize our deep need for a Savior in the darkness of the world. Lighting of Advent candles depicts our growing understanding that Jesus was born to save us from sin and darkness. As we celebrate the first coming of Jesus, his birth in human form, we also wait in expectation for his promised return: we prepare our hearts for the fulfillment of God’s promise, the coming of his kingdom on earth.
The Advent wreath is a circle that emphasizes God’s infinite grace and love: it has no beginning and no end. Evergreens remind us of everlasting life, made possible for us by the work of Jesus Christ. The traditional Advent wreath has four purple or blue candles grouped around a central white candle. Purple candles symbolize the coming of Christ from the royal line of King David: Jesus comes as the King of Kings and the Prince of Peace! A pink candle, symbolizing joy, commonly marks the third Sunday of Advent. It’s use to brighten the somber mood of Advent penitence dates back to the Latin church of the Middle Ages. The central white candle, larger than the others, represents the light of Christ.
Meaning is attributed to the candles of Advent in several ways. The first candle reflects expectation or hope. The second candle reminds us that we are in a season of preparation, seeking peace. The third candle represents proclamation and joy. The fourth candle represents the revelation of God’s love in the gift of his Son as our Savior. Other aspects of Christ’s first coming that may be tied to the candles are the Prophets, Bethlehem, Shepherds, and Angels. The season of Advent ends on Christmas Eve or Christmas Day, when the white Christ candle will be lit. The Advent vigil is completed when Christ the Lord arrives! We light Advent candles as a sign of the coming light of Christ; let us prepare ourselves!

Christmas Caroling in December
Pine Tree CPC members have expressed a desire to spread the joy of Christmas by singing carols at selected nursing facilities in December. We will gather to practice carols after worship on December 7 and 14. We plan to visit two nursing facilities the third weekend in the month. The specific venues and times for this musical offering have not yet been scheduled. Come sing with us for Sunday practices and we will keep you updated on our plans!
Christmas Eve Worship Service
Pine Tree CP Church will hold our traditional Christmas Eve worship service, including candle-lighting and communion, at 4:00 PM on Wednesday, December 24. Please join us as we ponder once again the beauty and mystery of Christ’s birth.
Poinsettias for Christmas
You are invited to bring a poinsettia (real or artificial) in memory of a loved one who has passed away or to honor someone who brings joy to your daily life. Poinsettias and the names of those honored or remembered may be brought to the church between December 15 to 24 during our regular business hours. We will use the flowers in decorating for the Christmas Eve worship service.
Pine Tree CPWM Activities
The Pine Tree CPWM met on October 18. At the business meeting, we voted to welcome male members to join us and received one new member! Helen Nunn presented the program, based on Isaiah 40:31, focusing us on the amazing strength and resilience of eagles, and reminding us that those who hope in the Lord will soar like these majestic birds. We enjoyed special food prepared and beautifully served by new member Brad Karl. We packaged treats and Bible verses for 65 residents at Pine Tree Lodge, which were delivered at Halloween.
We delivered ten shoeboxes packed with gifts for children of various ages during Operation Christmas Child Collection Week. These gifts will be distributed by Samaritan’s Purse along with prepared literature to spread the good news of the gospel of Christ in many countries of the world.
The next meeting of the Pine Tree CPWM will be Saturday, December 20 at 10:30 A.M. at the church. We will prepare platters of Christmas cookies for members who reside in nursing facilities or whose mobility challenges prevent regular attendance at church gatherings.
Outreach Dinner for Those in Need
On Thursday, December 18, we will hold our first outreach dinner for those in need, serving a hot meal to visitors from 5:30 PM to 7:00 PM. Dine-in meal service will be available on a first-come, first-served basis while supplies last. Helpers are needed in food preparation, service, and clean-up. Consider joining us in this effort to care for hungry people in our community. The menu for this event is yet to be determined.

From the Pastor’s Desk: The Season to Celebrate the Fullness of God
November finds us fully into the meteorologic season of autumn. Change is afoot in cooling temperatures and distinct weather patterns; we observe the differences in the lives of plants and animals. November is also a season of change in the church calendar. It is a season to celebrate the fullness, goodness, and blessing of God!
All Saints Day (November 1) gives us opportunity to remember and celebrate the lives of faithful believers in Christ who have nurtured and shaped our own faith lives. We rejoice that God’s kingdom is an everlasting kingdom that will never pass away or be destroyed, and there the saints, faithful believers who belong to God, are set apart to dwell with him forever (Daniel 7:14 and 27).
Christ the King Sunday (November 23) marks the end of the church calendar year. It is a day to celebrate the completeness of God’s plan to restore his people to himself through the sovereign reign of Christ (Colossians 1:12-14).
The Thanksgiving holiday (November 27), though secular rather than religious, aligns with the Feast of Harvest, when the firstfruits of the crops gathered from the fields are offered with praise and gratitude to God (Exodus 23:16-17).
This year, the last Sunday of November (November 30) will be the first Sunday of Advent, the season of anticipation and hope as we wait for the second coming of Christ the King and Savior.
Psalm 100 is a perfect meditation for this season of fullness, giving grateful praise to God:
1 Shout for joy to the Lord, all the earth. 2 Worship the Lord with gladness; come before him with joyful songs. 3 Know that the Lord is God. It is he who made us, and we are his; we are his people, the sheep of his pasture.
4 Enter his gates with thanksgiving and his courts with praise; give thanks to him and praise his name. 5 For the Lord is good and his love endures forever; his faithfulness continues through all generations.

Operation Christmas Child
We are collecting items for filling Operation Christmas Child boxes. Please bring purchased gifts to the church by Sunday, November 16. Gifts may be for a boy or girl, ages 2 to 4, 5 to 9, or 10 to 14. Do include: fun and quality toys that fit in a shoebox, hygiene and personal care items, school supplies, and accessories such as socks, sunglasses, or flashlights with batteries. Loaves and Fishes Offering
The Cumberland Presbyterian Church collects the annual “Loaves and Fishes” offering to bring God’s abundance into places of need. This year’s offering will support the Cumberland Presbyterian Hot Lunch ministry in Iloilo City, Philippines. This offering will allow children living in poverty to receive hot lunches, educational support, and Christian discipleship through the work of missionaries Rev. Daniel and Kay Jang. We will distribute boxes for collecting funds on November 9 and will collect the funds during worship on November 23.
All Saints Day Observance and Dedication of Paraments
Pine Tree CP Church will mark our traditional All Saints Day observance during worship on November 2. In prayerful ceremony, we will read the names of church and family members who have died in the past year, and family members will have the opportunity to enter names of beloved saints on a worship banner. “All Saints Day”, also called All Hallows or the Feast of All Saints, is a religious festival held on November 1 each year to honor all saints (faithful believers in Christ) who have passed away, whether canonized or not. The day is preceded by All Saints Eve (secularly known as Halloween) the night before. This is a time to honor and remember saints, martyrs, and faithful believers who are no longer with us and have shared, influenced, and nurtured our Christian faith.
The worship service on November 2 will include Communion and a dedication of new paraments (altar coverings) which were purchased from memorial gifts given in honor of William Everett. We are grateful to the Everett family and to all who contributed to the memorial fund.

From the Pastor’s Desk:
Lifting Prayers of Hope for the Community of Christ
Psalm 91:2 says, “You are my refuge and my hope, my God, in whom I trust.” The word of God assures us that He is always with us, guiding, protecting, and providing. “Because he loves me,” says the Lord, “I will rescue him; I will protect him, for he acknowledges my name. He will call on me, and I will answer him; I will be with him in trouble, I will deliver him and honor him. With long life I will satisfy him and show him my salvation.” (Psalm 91:14-16) God has a plan and a purpose for every person on earth and for every church he has brought into existence. Individually and collectively, our purpose is to glorify God. He made us to live in Holy Community with Him and with each other. Psalm 91 is God’s promise of hope to sustain us through times of trial. In these days, we may find ourselves – as individuals and as churches -- struggling to make ends meet, to find our purpose, and to be thriving and growing in Christ. Let us understand that in this season of time, we are not forgotten by God. His promises are new each morning. Together, all Christ-believing churches are the hands and feet of Christ on earth. In this season of time, we are called to carry on the ministry of Jesus, which was to draw all people to God through sacrificial love. Jesus has called us into relationship with himself, with God, and with each other. If we understand that God has a personal plan for each human life, why do we question that he also has a plan for each Christ-believing church?
In this season, let us be in prayer for the will of God and the passion of Christ in our lives and in the ministries of our churches. We are unique individuals, drawn together in Christ for the glory and purpose of God. We are challenged to open our hearts to relationship with others that we may all be drawn into God’s Holy Community. As our churches struggle to thrive, we must turn fervently to humble prayer, seeking God’s will. What is he calling you to do? What is he calling us to do together? Pray for God’s vision to be revealed to us. Pray for open and humble hearts and minds that we may receive God’s direction. Pray and wait for God’s response. Lamentations 3:22-24 reminds us, “Because of the Lord’s great love we are not consumed, for his compassions never fail. They are new every morning; great is your faithfulness! I say to myself, ‘The Lord is my portion; therefore, I will wait for him.’” To God we say, “Good morning, God! Hear our prayers!”

Pine Tree CP Church will observe a traditional service of worship honoring believers who passed before us on Sunday, November 2, at 10:30 A.M. Please contact the church office to add the names of loved ones who have passed away in the last year to our service of remembrance, and plan to join us for this special worship service. We will also dedicate the new paraments the church received through memorial gifts honoring past member William Everrett.

Angela Merritt’s Obituary
Angela Michele Merritt was called back to the Lord on the morning of August 25, 2025 at the age of 51. She was a beloved mother, daughter and sister as well as a friend and supporter of many others. No matter what challenges she faced in life, she gave it all she had and never gave up. She was preceded in death by her grandparents and her son, Joshua Merritt Perez. She is survived by her parents, Larry and Jackie Merritt of Liberty City, Texas and her sister and brother-in-law Stephanie and Joseph Hoffman of White Oak, Texas, her sons Samuel Perez of Liberty City, Texas and Connor Perez of California. Angela was a blessing to all who knew her and will be greatly missed.
Trinity North CPWM
The Fall meeting of the Trinity North Cumberland Presbyterian Women’s Ministry was held at Elmira Chapel CP Church on Saturday, September 6. The theme of “Bind Us Together”, based on Colossians 3:14, was displayed in the day’s events. Guest speaker, Jackie Hayden, brought a message of hope as we persevere through times of waiting for God. As we wait for him to respond to our prayers, we listen to hear his call on our lives. Representatives of each local CPWM unit gave a brief presentation of ministry activities through which individuals and groups are actively sharing the love of Christ in our local communities. We were amazed to hear of the broad spectrum of activities that are accomplished by members of Trinity North CPWM. We enjoyed a delicious lunch provided by Elmira Chapel CPC. The afternoon meeting closed with Communion.
Fall Meeting of Trinity Presbytery
The Trinity Presbytery Fall Meeting was hosted by New Journey CP Church on September 26, 2025. Business of the meeting included sharing of reports from working committees and from entities responsible for enacting ministry activities. We approved amendments to the CPC Constitution, approved the presbyterial budget for the coming year, and approved various grants to assist congregations in property and maintenance needs and meeting insurance costs. We were honored to meet Rev. Jhony Montaño, Moderator of General Assembly and his wife, who are from Colombia. Pastoral messages of the meeting were challenging and meaningful. Licentiate David Montoya brought a devotional entitled “Are We Praying As We Should?”, based on Matthew 6:6. Rev. Moderator Jhony Montaño provided the sermon during evening worship. Entitled “Running to Avoid Disqualification”, based on 1 Corinthians 9:24-27, his words challenged us to evaluate our ministry efforts for Christ and to realign our work with the will of Almighty God, lest we be disqualified from the “race” God has set before us. Both messages encouraged us to work harder to prayerfully discern God’s call upon our lives and our church ministries, and to persevere in obedience to his direction. The hospitality of New Journey CP Church included a beautifully decorated setting, delicious food, and wonderful fellowship. A Summary of Actions of the meeting, provided by our Stated Clerk, is available at the church or on our website. We are thankful for this blessed meeting of Trinity Presbytery.

From the Pastor’s Desk: “Resurrection, Reconciliation, Relationship”
And Jesus died for all, that those who live should no longer live for themselves but for him who died for them and was raised again. Resurrected! …All this is from God, who reconciled us to himself through Christ and gave us the ministry of reconciliation: that God was reconciling the world to himself in Christ, not counting people’s sins against them. Reconciled! And he has committed to us the ministry of reconciliation. We are therefore Christ’s ambassadors, as though God were making his appeal through us…” Relationship! 2 Corinthians 5:15,17-20
Do you take seriously the assignment to be an ambassador for Christ? Formally, an ambassador is “an accredited diplomat sent by a country as its official representative to a foreign country”. More generally, an ambassador is a person who acts as a representative or promoter of a specified activity. Ambassadors carry the message of the one who sends them and work through establishing relationships with people they did not know before they began their task. We are God’s accredited ambassadors because of our beliefs: We believe that Jesus is the Son of God who came to earth, died to pay the debt for all human sins, and was resurrected to eternal life, for the purpose of reconciling all humanity to God. The goal is to draw all people to Christ and, through him, to restore the broken relationship between God and his creation. The “three R's” of learning to be Christ’s ambassadors could be “Resurrection, Reconciliation, Relationship”. Relationships are God’s primary path for bringing people into his kingdom. As Christ’s ambassadors, we are tasked with establishing relationships both within and outside of the church to carry the message of the gospel: “Be reconciled to God through the resurrected Christ!”
One of our most powerful tools as ambassadors is to share our own salvation stories: What has Jesus done for you? How is your life made better because you know Jesus as your savior?
We must be willing to establish relationships to carry the message of reconciliation to those who have not yet accepted Jesus as Lord, or we fail as ambassadors. I implore you to focus on the building of relationships. Be salt – a catalyst for change. Be light – bring the light of Christ to the world’s darkness. Live with a Christ-like spirit – let others see the peace and joy we find as we place our faith, hope, and trust in God through Christ. Take the risk of sharing your story – Resurrection, Reconciliation, Relationship!

Trinity Presbytery Fall Meeting
The Trinity Presbytery Fall Meeting will be held at New Journey CP Church on September 26, 2025. The business meeting begins at 1:00 P.M. and will be followed by a meal and a worship service. We are honored to host the Moderator of the General Assembly of the Cumberland Presbyterian Church, Rev. Jhony Montano from Popayan, Colombia at this meeting. He will preach at the evening worship service of the presbytery meeting and again at Marchall CP Church on Sunday, September 28.
Activities of the Pine Tree CPWM
Members of Pine Tree Cumberland Presbyterian Women’s Ministry gathered on August 23, 2025, at the church to plan outreach for the coming seasons. In September and October, we will accept candy donations to be distributed to residents at Pine Tree Lodge at Halloween. Crocheted scarves and headbands will be given to clients at House of Hope and patients of Texas Oncology. We are conducting a year-long sock drive; donations of adult-size socks for men and women will aid outreach to homeless and needy populations of our community. In November, we will pack boxes for Operation Christmas Child. Marcia Ross presented a devotional program based on Isaiah 30:29. Marcia’s shared story encouraged us to always have a song in our hearts as we trust God in all things. A delicious meal was provided by Nancy Abernathy and our meeting closed with food and fellowship.
