Prelude                                                                                          Lighting of the Candles

Opening Scripture Sentence: I delight to do your will, my God, for your law is written in my heart. I have told everyone the Good News that you forgive men’s sins… I have proclaimed your lovingkindness and your truth to all the congregation.                                                                     Psalm 40:8-10 (TLB)

*Opening Prayer                                                                                                      Pastor

*Call to Worship                       Responsive Reading, Psalm 40:1-4, 7-8, 11 (RSV)

Leader: I waited patiently for the Lord; he inclined to me and heard my cry. He drew me up from the desolate pit, out of the miry bog, and set my feet upon a rock, making my steps secure.

All: He put a new song in my mouth, a song of praise to our God. Many will see and fear and put their trust in the Lord.

Leader: Happy are those who make the Lord their trust, who do not turn to the proud, to those who go astray after false gods.

All: Then I said, “Here I am; in the scroll of the book it is written of me. I delight to do your will, O my God; your law is within my heart.” Do not, O Lord, withhold your mercy from me; let your steadfast love and your faithfulness keep me safe forever.

Call to Confession

Unison Prayer of Confession

Holy God, we turn to you to renew our commitment. We confess that pride has led us to embrace false gods. We spend more time and energy on our pastimes than with the work to which you call us. We neglect the spiritual gifts entrusted to us. We forget that we have been called by name, baptized in the Spirit, and commissioned for service to your kingdom. O God, forgive our sins and bring us back to yourself. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Silent Prayer of Confession

May all who seek you rejoice and be glad in you; may those who love your salvation always say, “The Lord be exalted!” (from Psalm 40:16) Jesus Christ is the Lamb of God, who came to take away the sins of the world. (John 1:29)

Sacrifice and offering you do not desire; burnt offering and sin offering you have not required. But you have given us an open ear to hear your call, and open hands to be your servants. Guide our giving that we may respond to your saving grace with trust, joy, and generosity.                                                                  Psalm 96:8-9
