On Monday, July 29, family and friends of long-time church member Betty Peterson gathered to share her role in making the sanctuary’s stained-glass windows and to mark her 91st birthday. Betty wanted to share the beauty of the windows and her joy in the fellowship of making them with her current friends at Parkview. Betty’s son Doug wanted to help her accomplish this and also to provide a birthday celebration. Pine Tree Church was pleased to provide a place for the gathering of friends and family, to express our appreciation for work accomplished, and to share the story behind the stained-glass windows. A van from Parkview helped to provide transportation to the event, which was attended by 25 to 30 people. Twelve stained-glass windows grace the sanctuary and amplify our worship by providing beautiful images of the glory of God and His plan of salvation in Christ. The glass artwork was created in 1981 and 1982 by three Cumberland Presbyterian women – Betty Peterson, Lucille Stephenson, and Mabel Toler -- working under the direction of Rev. Charles Petty.

Betty is escorted into the event.

The crowd assembles in the Pine Tree Cumberland Church Sanctuary. The windows she helped design and construct line both sides of the church. To get a better look at each of the windows, read the Stained Glass story. Our Stained Glass Windows

Rev. Cindy Barton delivered a presentation to the attendees, of the story of the windows and Betty's part in their creation.

Afterwards, all attendees were invited to the Fellowship Hall for refreshments and visiting with Betty.

PASTOR CHARLES PETTY

Pastor Charles Petty served at the Pine Tree Cumberland Presbyterian Church from 1980-1984. He was a commercial artist and came up with the idea to make stained glass windows for the church. Pastor Petty researched how to do this project. Twelve stained glass windows were made. He demanded perfection.

These three women made the twelve stained glass windows in the church.  Ten stained glass windows are in the sanctuary and two are in rooms off the foyer.  Mabel, Betty, and Lucille read books to learn how to make stained glass windows. It was hard work and time consuming. They made the stained glass windows during 1981 and 1982.

Recently, on July 29th we celebrated Betty Peterson. Celebration Betty Peterson
