From the Pastor’s Desk:

An October Celebration of Unity in Christ’s Church

World Communion Sunday is celebrated every year on the first Sunday in October. The idea was proposed by Rev. Dr. Hugh Thompson Kerr, a Presbyterian pastor, in 1930. Although the special service was not widely practiced at first, in 1940 the World Council of Churches promoted the observance of World Communion Sunday in Christian churches around the globe. On this day, we remember that Jesus Christ is the head of the universal Christian church: all of us who claim the Resurrected Christ as Lord are one in faith. We are part of an earthly community that includes millions of worshippers who are united in advancing the ministry of Jesus in the world. Jesus’ mission was to bring all people into the Kingdom of God through his sacrificial death and resurrection to eternal life. He created the church to carry on his ministry after he ascended to heaven.

Jesus instituted the sacrament of the Lord’s Supper, Holy Communion, as he ate the Passover meal with his disciples on the night he was betrayed. The elements used in this sacrament – bread and fruit of the vine – represent the body and blood of Christ, and in partaking of them together, we remember his death, celebrate his resurrection, experience his living spiritual presence, and anticipate his promised return. The observance of this Communion meal is the sacrament through which we capture the presence of the risen Christ most completely. On World Communion Sunday, we celebrate this feast in unity of faith and action with millions of Christians on earth and in heaven.

World Communion Sunday helps us to appreciate Christians who are different than we are, recognizing that together we are the hands and feet of Christ all over the world. We work to realize Jesus’ prayer for all believers, offered on the night he was arrested: “I pray for those who will believe in me … that all of them may be one, Father, just as you are in me, and I am in you. May they also be in us…May they be brought to complete unity to let the world know that you sent me and have loved them even as you have loved me (John 17:20-23).

On October 6, 2024, join Christian believers all over the world in receiving the spiritual nourishment of Christ’s Communion meal.

This month we are collecting candy and goodies for Halloween treat bags to be given to residents at Pine Tree Lodge and Buckner Memory Care facilities. Please bring donations of candy and snacks to the church by October 20 and join us on the 26th for fun and fellowship as we prepare treats for our friends in care facilities.

All Saints’ Day Observance on November 3

All Saints' Day, also called All Hallows, Hallowmas, and Feast of All Saints, is a religious festival held on November 1 each year to honor all the saints, canonized or not. The day is preceded by All Saints’ Eve (secularly known as Halloween) the night before; it is followed the day after by All Souls’ Day. This is a time to honor and remember the saints, martyrs, and all faithful believers who are no longer with us and have shared, influenced, and nurtured our Chistian faith. Pine Tree CP Church will mark our traditional All Saints’ Day observance during worship on November 3. In solemn and prayerful ceremony, we will read the names of church and family members who have died in the past year. Please contact the church if you have loved ones to remember on this day.

Get Ready for Operation Christmas Child!

In November, we will again pack shoe boxes filled with gifts for Operation Christmas Child. We plan to assemble the boxes on Sunday, November 17, so please submit items for boys or girls ages 2-4, 5-9, and 10-14. Each box will be an expression of God’s love and should include newly purchased “wow” items (a fun toy such as a doll, small ball, stuffed animal, jump rope, yo-yo, or battery-operated light or sound producing item), personal care items, school supplies, or hats, socks, and shoes. For older children, solar calculators, sunglasses, journals, and flashlights are appreciated. Please do not include food items, toothpaste, scary or war-related items, liquids, lotions, breakable containers, or aerosols. Donations should be brought to the church by Thursday, November 14.

Bake Sale Coming!

Pine Tree CP Church will hold a bake sale at the church on Tuesday, November 26, just before Thanksgiving. Please be planning your donations of baked goods, snacks, and holiday treats that we will offer to the community in this fund-raising and community-building effort.
