From the Pastor’s Desk: Call Upon God by His Many Names

When you begin a prayer, how do you address the One to Whom You Pray? I call out so many times per day, “God, God… Help!” Sometimes I think that God must get tired of hearing me call out to him, but the Bible tells us that He does not. God wants us to be persistent in prayer, persevering to draw closer to him. Psalm 145:18-19 assures us “The Lord is near to all who call on him, to all who call on him in truth. He fulfills the desire of those who fear him; he also hears their cry and saves them.” To call on God in truth, reverence, and awe, we must be acutely aware of the One to Whom We Pray. Even the very first words we say in a prayer, the way we address God, set the tone for our time with him. God does not limit how we pray: each time we come to him, we choose the posture, tone, and topics most fitting for that moment. We even choose the names and adjectives by which we will summon his attention.

One of the ways we come to know the character and aspect of God is through his Name. The divine name reveals God’s power, authority, and holiness. Israel held God’s name in such reverence that they avoided speaking his personal name aloud. God revealed that name, I Am, to Moses in his encounter with the burning bush that was not consumed by fire. This God is eternal and infinite: He always has been and always will be. This is the God to whom we pray. He is Jehovah, the Self-existent One. He is YHWH (Yahweh), written LORD in many English Bibles.

One way of naming God combines the word El (a generic term for God) or the name Jehovah with a second term that reveals an aspect of God’s character. These names include El Shaddai (Almighty God), El-Elyon (Most High God), El-Roi (The God Who Sees), Jehovah-Jireh (The God Who Provides), Jehovah-Rapha (The God Who Heals). Each name of God can be connected to a way that God relates to his people. These names are represented in specific scriptures and stories of the Bible. Every name reveals to us a different aspect of our infinite God, a part of his character. Knowing the many names of God helps us understand our relationship to him. I challenge all of us to enrich our time with God by calling upon him by his many names and attributes. Use symbolic and figurative names (Rock, Refuge, Shield). Use powerful and descriptive names (King, Judge, Shepherd, Father). Call upon the Lord by his many names. Come near to the Lord and he will come near to you (James 4:8).

The Fall meeting of Trinity Presbytery will be held on Friday and Saturday, September 25-26, 2026, at the Marshall Cumberland Presbyterian Church. The business meeting begins at 1:00 PM on Friday and will be followed by an evening meal and worship service.

Trinity North CPWM to Meet 

The Fall meeting of the Trinity North Region CPWM will be held on September 12, 2026, at New Journey Cumberland Presbyterian Church, 1401 Alpine Road, in Longview. Registration begins at 9:00 AM and the meeting will begin at 9:30 AM. Guest speaker Misty Jackson-Miller will present information on the Cumberland Youth and Family Services in Denton, Texas. A breakfast snack and a delicious lunch will be served. All are invited to join in this event.

August Meeting of Pine Tree CPWM 

The Pine Tree CP Women’s Ministry met on August 8, 2026, at 1:00 PM at the church. Helen Nunn presented an encouraging program entitled, “The Star Thrower”, focusing on Proverbs 3:5 and the writing of Loren Eisley in The Unexpected Universe. Although we are sometimes overwhelmed by the magnitude of need in the world around us, even small acts of kindness can

make a difference. We each received a beautiful starfish to remind us to never give up in helping those God puts in our path. We also enjoyed a meal provided by Cindy Barton. Please consider joining us for Christian encouragement and fellowship when we meet next on October 17.

September Fellowship Meal 

The September Fellowship Meal will be held on September 13 following worship. Plan to join us for this special time of food and fellowship.

Columbia Earthquake Relief 

We have received a letter concerning the Columbia Earthquake from Rev. Dr. Milton Ortiz. Here is a synopsis of this correspondence to our Cumberland Presbyterian Family.

Ten days after the earthquake that struck Colombia, the reports indicate 314 deaths, 4,437 people injured, and 262 people missing impacting approximately 262,000 people. The damage to infrastructure is extensive: The economic and social impact will be significant and will require a long-term recovery effort.                                                                       For the Cumberland Presbyterian Church in Colombia, the recovery will involve more than repairing buildings. Churches and schools will need to support affected families, provide safe places for worship and education, restore damaged facilities, and respond to the economic consequences of the disaster. The immediate priority is to ensure that people are safe and that congregations and schools have the resources needed to resume their ministries as soon as possible.
